On behalf of Lucas and others like him, please stop using the word "retard" or "retarded" to describe a person or action as "dumb" -- Lucas does his best and struggles every day to try to keep up with his peers. We take for granted what takes Lucas so much effort to accomplish. It's not fair that he be discriminated against because of the way he was born -- like so many of us that at one point in time were deemed "unequal" in the eyes of society -- it's time people with disabilities are treated with the same respect we all deserve as human beings.Lucas is a beautiful, amazing and bright soul (in every way) with much to contribute to society, as long as he's given a chance.
We can help pave the path for that opportunity by helping end the use of the r-word. I honestly believe that -- one person at a time -- we can put this word where it belongs...to rest with all the other derogatory terms we've removed from our everyday language. Because it's not cool and it's certainly not nice.
